Locking it in
When you are offered a "rate lock" from your lender, it means that you are guaranteed to keep a certain interest rate for a determined period for your application process. This ensures that your interest rate cannot rise during the application process.
Although there may be a choice of rate lock periods (from 15 to 60 days), the longer ones are usually more expensive. You can get a longer period for your lock, but in choosing this option, will most likely have a higher rate than you would have with a shorter rate lock period

In addition to choosing a shorter lock period, there are more ways you can get the best rate. A larger down payment will give you a better interest rate, since you are starting out with a good deal of equity.
